Year 1 Spring Term 2019

 Title of theme: New Life

This term we will be learning all about animals and plants.

In Literacy we will be sharing Julia Donaldson stories which feature a variety of different animals.

In Maths we will be continuing with our rods learning. Our rods have now become numbers and we are using our skills to solve tricky addition and subtraction problems. We will be moving on to fractions.

As scientists we will be identifying and naming different animal groups such as reptiles, amphibians and mammals. We will also be learning about the different parts of a plant and how they help the plant to grow. Watch out for a science trip!

As historians we will be asking questions about how daily life has changed and how people used to live in our local area. Watch out for a history trip!

As design technologists we will be designing and making products with moving parts such as levers, sliders and springs.

As artists we will be learning to paint more skilfully by observing more closely. We will be focusing on the different techniques such as texture, line, shape, form and space.

All children need to be wearing correct PE kit to take part in PE lessons.

Indoor PE: Monday

Outdoor PE: Tuesday

Please keep your PE kit in school until Friday as PE lessons may change due to weather circumstances.

New spellings will be given every Monday for a test on Friday. Please encourage your child to write these every night, using the sheet provided.

Please try to help your child make an independent start to the day by encouraging them to hang up their coat and come into the classroom on their own.

Home learning

Home learning will be given out on a Friday and is due back the following Friday. This will be something that the children will hopefully enjoy doing and can be done independently or with adult help.

Please read daily with your child and sign the reading record. Also, do come and discuss your child’s book

Pop in and read!

Every Tuesday we would love you to come in and share a book with your child. You could stay for 5 minutes or the full 20 minutes – it’s up to you!

if you think it is too easy or difficult.

Parents’ evenings

In March there will be parents’ evenings. Dates to follow nearer the time.

However, please come and talk to us anytime to discuss; progress, homework, friendships or behaviour.

Over the Spring term we will be organising a science trip and a history trip. We might even have some animal visitors! Check your child’s book bag for information.
